UEFA Champions League group draw

Trabzonspor found themselves in the draw for the Champions League groups after Fenerbahce got kicked out of the competition on grounds of accusations of match-fixing. BATE Borisov and Viktoria Plzeň face no chance in Group H agains Barcelona and Milan, while the other groups seem a little bit more even, leaving more chance for the 3rd team in each group to advance to the round of 16. Groups A and F seem the most even.

UEFA Champions League play-offs, 2nd leg results

As expected, Bayern made it to the group stage after a second win against Zürich. Villareal struggled for 50 minutes to score against Odense and confirmed their status as favourites with a 3-0 win (3-1 agg).

Malmö were one goal short of overturning their 1st leg result (1-4) and lost the place in the groups to Dinamo Zagreb.

It only took 6 minutes to score all three goals in Genk – Maccabi Haifa and the match advanced to the penalties. Genk won 4-1.

Aílton scored twice and togheter with Pareiko’s own goal it was enough for APOEL to get past Wisła.

Arsenal made it to the group stage after a 2-1 away win even with Fabregas gone to Barcelona. BATE Borisov took Sturm by storm and surprised everyone by winning 2-0 in Austria.

The 2nd leg of UEFA Champions League is going to take place today and tomorrow. You might have missed the first leg if you were watching the 6th (I think) El Clasico of 2011 last week. In case you missed it though, here are the scorers: Andres Iniesta goal (15′),  Cristiano Ronaldo (20′),  Lionel Messi (45′, 88′),  Karim Benzema (81′). It was the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup (first leg happened the week before and it ended 2-2).

Tottenham is on their way to the Europa League’s groups, with nothing to worry about next week’s match.


Europa League play-offs 1st leg

While Lazio, PSG, Tottenham and Fulham have a very easy job in next week’s game, other favourites didn’t perform just as well. It is the case of Sparta Praha (which lost 2-0 to Vaslui), Roma (lost 1-0 against Slovan) and maybe Panathinaikos (lost 3-0 to Maccabi Tel-Aviv). Sevilla and Rosenborg were also expectd to do much better.

Razvan Lucescu’s Rapid is the clear favourite after their away win (1-3) against Śląsk. Altough they won the same 3-1 against Gaz Metan Medias, Austria Wien should be wary of the Romanians that knocked out Mainz in the previous round.
